    « Can't use iPhone dock »
The Otterbox Defender is definetely on the Ft. Knox end of iPhone cases. I purchased mine in February 2010 and have had it about one month. I haven't put it through much of a stress test yet but it seems to be very protective. It has rubber covers over all the buttons and connectors which many other cases do not. The screen cover doesn't seem to impede the response to finger touch but it definetely has the "oil slick" effect mentioned in other reviews. As you touch the case the pattern of the oil slick moves with your finger. Some people may find this entertaining, others extremely annoying. I haven't tried the idea of putting a seperate screen protector on the iPhone before putting it in the Otterbox case. How many layers of protection can you need?

I like to use a belt clip or holster for my cell phone (yes I know it makes me look like a nerd). It hasn't happened to me yet, but I wonder about the phone accidentally coming out of the belt holder. The phone audibly 'clicks' into the belt clip when attachment points on the case fit into the belt holder. This makes for an very accessible way to get the phone with one hand but if the phone gets caught on something it might come out of the belt holder by accident. Also, the phone is pretty easy to put in the holder except that any clothing that gets in the way is a problem. For example. a shirt or any coat must be very carefully gotten out of the way before putting the phone in the belt clip or it will prevent the phone from clipping in, or get trapped between the phone and belt clip. If you wear your shirts tucked in, this would be less of a problem.

The Defender also eliminates the possibility of using an iPhone dock/cradle as the bottom of the phone is covered by the case. Removing the case is too difficult to do every day just to use the cradle. Also I have an FM transmitter I sometimes use when driving and the plug on it that goes into the phone is big enough that the Defender blocks it.

« Not pretty, but you don't want it for its looks »
I read hundreds of reviews, called the company, and spoke with another woman who works outdoors, so I heard all of the pros & cons before I made my decision. I bought this particular Otterbox style because I know that my phone will be exposed to dust and rain, and I need the protection that the Defender case provides. The case is thick, which takes away from the shiny, sleek look of the iPhone, but I dropped my phone 4 feet onto concrete a few days after I got the case, and it was completely undamaged. And if you're trying to gather husky hair, this is the case for you! My case is black - too boring - but white husky hair shows up perfectly well! Get one of the colored cases - even though they are ugly - you can more easily find it at the bottom of a bag. There are other Otterbox cases to choose from, and the company's website is extremely useful in helping you sort out whether you need the level of protection that the Defender case provides. You'll also learn how to properly attach the 2-part Defender to your phone.

« No monster, no docking »
Okay, the product is STURDY and fits like a glove. All the holes line up well with earplugs, vibrate switch and the input for your cord. Yes, it collects lint. Big deal, dust if off.

The DEALBREAKER here is the fact that the design is pretty flawless except for one huge cluster____. You cant dock it with any Ihome, Altec Lansing or Monster cord. There is so much bulky plastic at that end, nothing will fit in there.

I emailed the company and here is the response:

Update for Case #95836 - "Wont fit docking stations"
    [Customer]

At this time we are unaware of a docking station that will work with our case right out of the box. However I have heard of customers purchasing docking extenders and then modifying them to allow them to fit through our case. You may want to contact a company called cablejive.com or monstercable.com.

    Thanks,

Are you serious. I just paid $30 for a case and you offer a chance to buy more crap from another vendor? How about fixing the glitch? An iphone with no way of docking it to listen to music has HALF the functionality before it was in this case. It is way to much of a hassle to remove from the case everytime you want to use your ipod in the car or with speakers. I took a file to mine earlier this evening to modify it.

« Great case, bad holster »
Excellent case! My phone has hit the pavement many times without a glitch. My problem is that the holster is the reason my phone keeps hitting the pavement. The phone pops out of the holster way too easily. A case built to protect your phone should come with a holster that will keep your phone where it is suppose to be. My advice is buy the case and ditch the holster. If the Otterbox came with a decent holster 5 stars would be too low but as it is I can only justify 3.
